She seems to usually dislike writing, much like another one of my (non-lesbian) favorite authors, Douglas Adams. He’d take as many baths in a day as he could to procrastinate. Well, I’m glad some of these authors slog through it for our sakes.
Have you read any of Sarah Waters’s books? What did you think of them?

I would like to make out with Fingersmith and the rest of her novels are also excellent and only suffer from not being Fingersmith when one expects them too.

It is pretty difficult to live up to the awesomeness that is Fingersmith. I don’t know how many times reading it I stopped to think “WHAT.” I liked Tipping the Velvet probably about as much, but you’re right, the rest can only be seen as not good if you’re comparing them to Fingersmith; left on their own they’re still brilliant.

I really like Sarah Waters! It is interesting to me that she doesn’t like to write- I wonder if she feels like she HAS to because she’s good at it. That would be sad for her (Even if it’s good for us!)
It just seems like, in her books, the language flows so easily and naturally that it can’t be difficult for her, but now I appreciate that it must take a lot of effort!

I know, it is surprising, isn’t it? But I think the books that are easiest to read are hardest to write. She does say they are some shining moments that make it all worthwhile, but I think some writers like having written a lot, but not the actual writing process.
