A Sapphic Celestial Slow Burn: Conjuring & Crossroads by Luciana Morfa

April 26, 2025 by Zauditu S.

Conjuring & Crossroads cover

Romantic Fantasy | LGBTQ+ | Mythology Mashup | Enemies-to-Lovers | Slow Burn

You know that feeling when you finish a book and just kind of… sit there, clutching it to your chest like it personally changed your life? That was me after reading Conjuring & Crossroads by Luciana Morfa. It’s one of those reads that sneaks up on you—fun and swoony at first, and then suddenly you’re crying over two goddesses learning how to love each other through centuries of baggage.

The story follows Hecate—yes, the Greek goddess of witchcraft—who is powerful, emotionally walled-off, and absolutely not in the market for love. Enter Stefana “Stef” Val, a newly-awakened witch tied to the Norse goddess Freyja, just trying to survive her messy, magic-soaked life without burning out. The two cross paths at a Winter Solstice ball (think divine fashion and mutual pining), and from there: Sparks. Chaos. Murder. Magic. It’s part murder mystery, part celestial slow burn, and somehow still finds space for deep emotional healing.

One of my favorite things about this book is how Morfa handles the mythology. She doesn’t just pull from Greek and Norse myths—she reimagines them in this totally fresh way. Training with Melinoë in the Mourning Fields? Hades popping in as a proud, slightly awkward dad figure? Hidden witch enclaves and dimensional portals? It’s all so immersive and inventive. And that opening scene with the Fates literally weaving destiny gave me goosebumps. The way their presence lingers in the background of the story is so subtle and smart—just enough to remind you that destiny is always watching.

But let’s talk about the heart of this story: Hecate and Stef. If you love a good slow burn, buckle up. Their relationship is messy, raw, and full of tension—there’s mistrust, vulnerability, and a lot of “I can’t, but I want to.” And when they finally let those walls down, it’s not just a romantic payoff—it’s emotional catharsis. There’s one line from Stef that completely wrecked me: “You make me feel like I’m not alone in the world anymore.” It’s simple, but it says everything—because by that point, you’ve watched them earn each other’s trust, piece by piece. And the epilogue? I won’t spoil it, but it holds a quiet, unexpected twist— something beautifully symbolic that ties everything together. A love like theirs doesn’t just burn-it endures. It’s sapphic mythic romance turned all the way up.

At its core, Conjuring & Crossroads is about two powerful women trying to figure out who they are and whether they can make space for love while carrying the weight of the divine on their shoulders. It’s emotional, intelligent, and full of sharp edges softened by trust. It’s also wildly fun and absolutely packed with witchy vibes and mythological easter eggs. If you’re into WLW fantasy with goddesses, sword fights, soft moments, and a love that spans lifetimes, this one belongs at the top of your TBR.
