Bain Rock is a fast-paced dystopian sapphic 80s fantasy. It’s perfect for older teens and readers who like 80s aesthetic/ fantasy, political intrigue, sapphic romance and found family. As a GenXer, I wrote the book that I wanted to read. It’s a passion project and a tribute to my 80s childhood, pop culture and film, as well as, dedicated to my beloved wife Lou and my Azorean family (especially my grandmother with whom I had a very special bond in the beautiful island of Saint Michael, Azores).
Bain Rock has been a few years in the making with several iterations. As a medic I had to put it aside during the pandemic years. I hired an editor after several drafts and decided to change point of view to first person and present tense to bring more immediacy to the story, especially as I explore themes of belonging, identity, and coming out/coming of age story.
Another eighteen months flew past to its eventual publication in October 2025. Nothing like a health scare earlier in the year to motivate me! I had a few novels gathering digital dust… and what a ride it has been! It became an Amazon UK Bestseller in YA Lesbian fiction in early December, which made me so happy. Indie Authors struggle with visibility, so I’m so grateful for every rating and review.
Anyway, here’s more about the story:
June, 1984. On the remote island of Inea, the militia has outlawed all magic.
Emma is born into a long line of witches, but when she turns nineteen, her magical powers haven’t yet manifested. Nor is the daughter of a sworn enemy and prominent Dissenter. As war brews between rival factions, the Council of Witches and the Dissenters, Emma sets out on a perilous quest to save her last living relative. Emma and Nor’s paths collide, and forbidden love unfolds. But not everything is as it seems, and Emma uncovers a secret that threatens everything. As a formidable foe rises, old enemies must work together if they’re to stop him, and Emma must decide how far she’s willing to go.
Bain Rock is available on Kindle Unlimited, Amazon and all major retailers, as well as via direct sales from my Author’s website : www.jancabraljackson.com
I hope you love it as much as I do. It is meant to appeal to all ages and I’m currently writing the sequel, Rebellion.
All the best,
